'Make hay while the sun shines'. We've all heard the saying but for many farmers and agricultural contractors this statement has become just as applicable when times are hard. Compared with baled silage, relying on hay as a winter feed can seem like a lower cost option. But is it actually a cheaper alternative? Or is it more a case of false economy?

Q. How should I choose which brand of film I should use?
A. Choose a reputable long established brand, which exhibits a high level of tack, to achieve a good seal around the bale. Do not make price per reel a priority, as in general "you get what you pay for". Ask wrapper manufacturers which brand they use.

Quality assured

To ensure you can count on our products for dependable performance time after time after time, bpi.agri operates stringent quality controls procedures. As part of this, every area of our operations – from our raw materials right through to our product packaging – is regularly tested and randomly checked in order to maintain the very highest standards. In addition, all our factories hold ISO 9001:2008 quality certification.

Protecting the environment

Long before green issues became topical, bpi.agri was working to make its products more environmentally sensitive. As a result, we now have an unrivalled ability to help farmers and agricultural contractors ‘close the loop’.

Not only are our products 100% recyclable but we’ve also been instrumental in setting up waste farm plastic collection services, which can deliver recyclable scrap such as used balewrap, tree guards and fertiliser bags to our sister business, bpi.recycled products. Part of the BPI group, bpi.recycled products is Europe’s largest recycler of polythene reprocessing over 64,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year.

Every tonne of plastic that BPI recycles:
• Prevents the release into the atmosphere of 1.4T CO2.
• Saves 1.8T of crude oil.
• Reduces water usage by 90% compared to using virgin material.

In recent years bpi.recycled products has invested over £18million into its state of the art recycling facilities where it reprocesses used agricultural films including silage stretchwrap and silage sheets from farms across the UK through a network of nationwide collectors.

These farm films are recycled into a variety of practical, useful products including the award-winning range of Plaswood street furniture and The Green Sack range of refuse bags.

Plaswood, an environmental alternative to traditional materials, is used in fencing, bollards, seating and decking products. It is low maintenance, rot proof and algae resistant and can be fully recycled once again at the end of its life.

The Green Sack is the toughest, greenest refuse sack currently available in the UK marketplace. Made from 100% recycled British farm waste plastics that might otherwise be burnt or sent to landfill, it has a carbon footprint at least 35% lower than imported refuse sacks.

For further information regarding recycling your agricultural films, please contact bpi.recycled products via recycle@bpipoly.com or on +44 (0)845 304 2567. Concerns about the environment have resulted in many countries developing collection and recycling schemes for used farm plastics. If you are based outside the UK please contact your Local Authority for advice regarding local collection and recycling facilities.
